H ave you ever watched your child fill a bucket, dump it out… and then immediately start again? Or build a tower only to knock it down two seconds later? It can seem messy or even confusing — but it’s actually something incredible:

✨ They’re learning how the world works.

These repeated patterns of behaviour are called play schemas — the brain’s way of experimenting, testing, and making sense of experiences. Schemas help children develop problem-solving, motor skills, creativity, spatial awareness, social understanding, and more.

When we recognize these schemas, we stop saying, “ Why are they doing that? ” and start saying...
“Wow — look what they’re learning!”

While the wet weather may keep you indoors, it also provides the perfect opportunity to engage in fun and educational activities with your toddler. Here are some playful and enriching ways to make the most of rainy days while supporting your child’s learning and development.

1. Indoor Obstacle Course

Turn your living room into an exciting adventure course! Use pillows, chairs, cardboard boxes, and blankets to create a safe obstacle path. Crawling through boxes, jumping over cushions, and balancing on a tape line can enhance gross motor skills and coordination while keeping toddlers active indoors.

2. Sensory Bin Fun

Bring a little bit of nature inside with a rainy-day sensory bin. Fill a plastic container with items like water beads, rice, or kinetic sand and add toy animals, measuring cups, and scoops for hands-on exploration. Sensory play helps with fine motor skills and cognitive development, while also providing a calming experience.

3. DIY Rain Art

Take advantage of the rain by creating a fun science-meets-art activity! Let your child color on coffee filters with washable markers, then place them outside in the rain for a few moments to watch the colors blend and swirl. Once dry, you’ll have a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece of art to display.

4. Storytime Fort

S pring is a magical time for young children. The world is waking up, flowers are blooming, and new life is sprouting everywhere. It’s the perfect season to engage kids in sensory play — helping them explore the world through touch, smell, sight, sound, and even taste! Sensory play encourages discovery and inquiry, building essential skills like fine motor development, problem-solving, and language growth.

In this blog, I’ll share some fun and easy spring sensory play ideas, including creative gardening activities to get your little ones excited about the season.

1. Planting and Gardening Sensory Bins

Gardening is one of the best hands-on sensory experiences for kids. The feel of soil between their fingers, the smell of fresh herbs, and the sight of tiny green shoots create a rich sensory experience.

What You’ll Need:

• A shallow bin or tray (or sensory bin)

• Potting soil

• Small plastic pots

• Small gardening tools (like a spade or trowel)

• Seeds (like beans, sunflowers, or herbs)

• Small flowers

• Watering Can

How to Do It:

• Toy birds

• Small toy eggs (plastic)

• Feathers

• Wood pieces (twigs and small wood cutouts)

• Brown yarn cut in small pieces (worms)

• Tweezers

How to Do It:

1. Arrange a combination of green and brown paper on the bottom of the bin. Place the house and nest in the bin.

2. Scatter the yarn worms around the paper and hide some underneath the “grass”.

3. Place the eggs in the nest as well as the birds.

4. Encourage your child “feed” the birds by using the tweezers to pickup the worms and feed them to the birds.

5. Encourage open-ended play with your bird habitat.

Top 10 Outdoor Learning Activities

“ N ature is the best classroom! Outdoor learning enhances curiosity, physical development, and environmental awareness.”

T he benefits of outdoor learning are invaluable. When kids explore nature, their curious minds light up with questions. Unstructured outdoor play develops their physical skills and confidence. Most importantly, it cultivates a deep appreciation for the environment.

Embrace the power of outdoor learning with my top 10 outdoor learning activities:

1. Bubble Play

Young children are fascinated by bubbles that float and pop. This encourages infants and toddlers to walk and crawl as they follow the bubbles. Chase the bubbles or just watch them float away.

2. Chalk Drawing

Provide a space for children to draw with chalk outside. Think about various surfaces that you will allow children to draw on such as floors, walls, fences, rocks etc. Cleaning up can be fun too! Use Spray bottles full of water to clean up the chalk drawings.

3. Water Painting

Painting with water can provide hours of fun! Provide your child with a paintbrush and a bucket of water. You can paint anything outside with water! Let your child’s imagination guide the play. What will your child paint? The brick wall, a wood fence, rocks, a chair etc.

4. Digging in The Dirt

Children love to dig! Provide a space for your child to dig in the dirt – whether directly in the ground in a garden or in a flowerpot filled with dirt.

5. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Make a list of nature items you want to hunt for such as rocks, sticks, leaves, acorns, pinecones etc. You can do this activity in your own backyard or go on a walk in your neighborhood. Take a magnifying glass with you and a bag to collect all your treasures.

6. Make Mud Pies

Young children love to mix ingredients together and cook! All you need to make mud pies is a table, pot, spoons, dirt and water. Children will add in their own “ingredients” to make their special concoction such as rocks, leaves, sticks etc.

7. Car Wash

Setup a car wash with your child’s riding toys or bikes. Provide some sponges, a bucket of soapy water and bring out the bikes and outdoor riding toys and you have a car wash! It’s a great way to keep outdoor toys clean!

8. Build a Fort

There are so many ways to build a fort! You can use big cardboard boxes, chairs/blankets or even existing outdoor structures like poles and trees. Let your child guide the building process and resist the urge to take over – no matter how much fun you’re having!

9. Sand and Water Play

Fill a container with sand or water. Add toys to add to the play such as cars, dinosaurs, animals or dolls. Add some natural elements such as rocks, sticks, leaves or pinecones. Add in some interesting utensils such as sticks, strainers, spoons, scoopers and spatulas. Sand and water play possibilities are endless depending on what you add to the sand or water! It will be a different experience every time

10. Obstacle Course

Make an obstacle course using various items that children need to climb, crawl, move around or jump in or out of. Things you can use include: hula hoops, pool noodles, boxes, traffic cones, logs or other natural features in the space.

Dealing With Toddler Tantrums – 5 Tips

T oddler tantrums got you feeling frustrated? Toddler tantrums are a normal part of a child’s development. It’s our job as caregivers to know how to react to the tantrum so that we can help children learn from them. Here’s five tips to help you handle those meltdowns.

1. Stay calm

This is probably the hardest thing to do since you don’t like to see your child in distress. As a caregiver, your child’s emotions are linked to your own emotions. Your child will react to your emotions and reactions. Reacting by being upset, shouting or frowning could make it difficult for them to calm down. Instead, try to stay calm (including your own body language) to help your child to regulate their own difficult emotions.

2. Acknowledge their feelings with empathy

Validate your child’s emotions by naming them and accepting them. Use empathy to show the child that you understand what they want. You can say “I see that you are angry because you couldn’t have that candy you wanted.” This helps the child know that you understand their perspective.

3. Offer choices or distractions

Give limited options or redirect attention to get past the tantrum. This can be a little tricky. When they are in the middle of a meltdown, they may not be open to other options. Use redirection to shift the child’s focus to something else that they would normally prefer. If possible, offer calming activities such as sensory play (sand/water/Playdough) to help them calm down after a tantrum.

4. Offer comfort, connection and set the boundary

Speak in calm, soft tones. Offer a hug or other gesture of comfort. Offer a safe space where they won’t get hurt by their actions. This might include carefully moving them so they are not a danger to themselves. Stay close by without being in the line of fire. If a child is biting, hitting or kicking, stay clear and set the boundary. For example, while you move away from them you can say ”It’s ok to be angry but it’s not ok to hit me.” Avoid saying “calm down” as this generally doesn’t help.

5. Avoid lengthy conversation until after the child has calmed down

This is not the time to try to have a discussion with the child about their behaviour or what led to the behaviour. Your child is not able to listen to you when they are dysregulated. They cannot reason in a rational way. Keep your interactions short with just a few words to let them know you are there for them. When the tantrum is over, you can talk about it in a calm and rational manner. For example, you can talk about what to do when they are angry (e.g. stomp feet, punch a pillow).
